Inside Out was the culmination of the Seminar in Design Theory & Practice course as an end-of-semester showcase event. During the showcase, the students organized fun research activities about AI, and people’s online identities, and understood whatโs in the black box of technology. We also set up a coffee bar with freshly brewed coffee from around the world for participants to enjoy and reflect on their personal values.
We kickstarted the event with a warm welcome and observed great participation from undergrad, grad students, and professors from across the school of design who participated in the four participatory activities. All the activities were designed based on the learnings through the seminar course.
Activities Description:
1. Imagining with AI
by Jamie Choi, Luis Garcia, Wei-Chieh Wang
Never before have we been able to create at the speed of AI. Can this technology help us grasp abstract concepts? Does our imaginaries become clearer through recognizing the gaps between our own imagination and what AI can bring to reality?
2. Designer Coffee
by Kate Guo, Saurin Nanavati, Shih-hsueh Wang, Yeonjin Park
Do you drink your values? Do you identify with those choices? Are your choices consistent with what you take to be your own beliefs and values? Designer Coffee invite all designers to join the Interactive coffee experience that utilize visual prompt stories and activities to help participants reflect on their values.
3. Who are you?
by Eva Chung, Juwon Lee, Lokesh Fulfagar
Are you the same person on TikTok and LinkedIn? Would you show your YouTube recommendations to your next date? Come and reflect on the different identities you hold online and how do others perceive them.
4. Unveiling the Black Box
by Anupriya Gupta, Elaine Lu, Youngryun Cho
As designers, we often encounter technology as a black box with limited knowledge of how it works, how to use it, or how to design interactions for it. To push the boundaries of the role of design, we seek to understand how designers conceive and visualize their ideas about different interaction modalities, given an intelligent technology capability. The study will focus on everyday use cases of technologies and identify patterns or themes to further our shared understanding.
